San Ramon Staircase Remodel

Custom Staircase & Railing Remodel
Staircase remodel6 weeksSpanish-style home
Overview

A staircase remodel that honors a Spanish-style home

The staircase is the first thing you see when you walk into this hillside Spanish-style home — a two-story entry framed by arched doorways, exposed wood beams, and the family's original wrought-lantern chandeliers. The railing, though, had aged past the rest of the house. We replaced it end to end with custom wrought-iron railings, hand-scrolled balusters, and a woven patterned runner — a remodel designed to feel like it had always belonged to the home, not like something added to it.

01 — The Challenge

A dated railing in a home full of original character

The staircase anchors the entry — but its railing had aged past the rest of the house. Any replacement had to solve three things at once, without ever fighting the home's Spanish character.

An aesthetic mismatch

The old railing read as an afterthought against the home’s Spanish arches, beamed ceilings, and ornate period lighting.

Everyday sturdiness

As the main, daily-use staircase, it needed real structural strength the existing railing couldn’t offer.

Character to preserve

No modern replacement that fights the architecture — the new railing had to match and elevate the home’s Spanish style.

02 — The Solution

Hand-scrolled iron, a woven runner, and every original detail preserved

We designed and installed custom wrought-iron railings with hand-scrolled heart-and-vine balusters — a nod to traditional Spanish ironwork, fabricated to fit the staircase's exact turns and landings. A matte-black finish grounds the entry against the white plaster walls and lets the scrollwork read as detail, not decoration. On the treads, we fitted a woven geometric runner in warm neutral tones that adds grip and softens footfall on the main stair, while the marble-look landing ties the entry together. The home's original lantern chandeliers and arched openings stayed exactly where they've always been — the remodel was built around them. The result is a staircase that's safer, sturdier, and finally equal to the home it anchors.
